How The Big Lie In works
The Big Lie In… Get ready to do nothing!
Have you ever thought to yourself “Wouldn’t it be nice to spend the whole day in bed” ? Well, now’s your chance. On Sunday the 17th of April people all around the country will be taking to their beds for The Big Lie In, a sponsored day in bed in aid of Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services!
Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Well, it might not be as easy as you’d think. A full day in bed can be a real challenge. What do you do when you get bored? What do you do when the doorbell rings? What do you do when you just want to get up and have a bit of a stretch, go for a walk or get a breath of fresh air?
This is our challenge to you! We’d love you to give it a go and find out for yourself. But remember, whether it sounds like a dreamy way to support or like a nightmare, either way you can rest assured that every hour you spend in bed will help make a real difference to the lives, and end-of-life, of our patients and residents here in Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services.
See the difference you make
There is no end to the stories our patients and residents could tell you to illustrate just how positive an impact your fundraising will make – but here is just one example from our friend and resident Paul Reid…
Paul was a leading figure in men’s fashion retail in Dublin from the 1970s.
Paul started in the fashion industry at 16 and worked his way up until he was running his own store; he served the rich and famous like Cliff Richard, Liz Taylor, Richard Burton and Ryan O’Neal (he even had an employee who married U2’s guitarist The Edge, so as you can imagine he’s full of great stories).
But Paul’s life was to change dramatically in 2013 when he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease; his consultant gave him just a few years to live.
Now Paul is quite a character – you have to meet him to appreciate just the type of soul he is; he did not want to burden his family at all and immediately started looking into care homes.
When he saw the level of care and support services offer through Our Lady’s Hospice he put his name down for a place. Finally in March 2015 he got a permanent room.
There are many ‘Pauls’ out there that we help. We are currently working hard to raise greatly needed funds and any sponsorship money you can raise will make a huge difference to the lives, and to the end-of-life, of our residents and patients here in Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services.
No one should have to make their final journey alone, in pain or distress.
That’s why we’re here – to provide expert loving care, pain relief and emotional support in the hospice and in thousands of family homes.
None of us want to be here, but we’re very lucky we are. I have 24/7 care. I want for nothing. It’s down to the staff. Everyone is so good, so friendly and so dedicated. They make it so personal to each one of us. This place gives me quality of life and peace of mind – that’s amazing.
Other ways to get involved
There may be those among you that find the thought of spending a whole day in bed as torture. A whole day doing nothing? Are we crazy?
If you want to twist The Big Lie In on its head and make up your own variation, that’s absolutely fine with us …there are no rules of engagement here!
For example, you could try getting a few mates together and go camping so you can spend the whole day lazing outside instead of inside. Be sure to let us know what you get up to and the ways in which you raise money.
But a whole day?
And if it’s the concept of the whole day that’s bugging you, then a token gesture is just as effective. What about a sponsored bed push? Do you have a group of friends who’d be willing to get a bit of exercise whilst taking on this challenge!?
Schools involvement
Sponsorship events are always a great way to teach children the values of helping others, raising their awareness about different issues and also letting them have a lot of fun. There are lots of ways your school could get involved; a non-uniform pyjama day is an easy way to take part, perhaps children could wear their pyjamas over their day clothes for fun? If you are a school teacher, why not see if the students (parents) can sponsor you to come into school in your pyjamas for the day – or have them all bring is a favourite teddy that can have its very own Big Lie In inside the school for the whole night!
Hints & tips
Sponsored events should be fun – for many people taking part in a sponsored event is very much an occasional thing, so we want to make sure you have a bit of a craic with this one. Here are some fun ideas how you could make The Big Lie In work for you:
- Don’t do it alone – do it with friends!
- Think about all the things you can get done while you have some peace and quiet for once… grab that book you’ve always said you have to read, dig out your address book and write some letters to friends and family, plug your laptop in and catch up on that box set… the options are endless!
- Get your family organised in advance (after all, if you’re in bed they have to do the cooking and cleaning for the day, right?)
So what meals do you want prepared and brought to you on a tray?
How to Return Funds
There’s no point in spending a lazy day in bed doing nothing if you have to work hard to return your funds, so we’ve made it super easy for you. You can return the sponsorship money you raise in any of the following ways:
- Phone us to supply your credit card details over the phone
- Send us a cheque
- Use your Internet Banking to make a transfer to us next time you log online
- Visit our website and hit the friendly “Make a donation” button (be sure to select Big Lie In)
- Drop off the money in person, either at our Harold’s Cross or Blackrock Hospice sites

Corporates
The Big Lie In is set for a Sunday, and the official day for companies to get involved is Friday, 15th April, but any day that works for you is just fine. Perhaps you might like to get your whole company behind the campaign? We’re happy to send you out registration packs and everything else you’ll need to make the Big Lie In a fun and worthwhile day. Here’s what we’d like you to do….
- Run an inter-departmental sponsorship competition
- Organise an in-house raffle (we’d suggest €10 per ticket) and give the winner the day off so they can stay in bed!
- If you don’t think you can spare any staff for the day, how about allowing those taking part to wear their PJs into work!
- Send us details about your company and some pictures of those getting involved, we’d love to spread the word

Our Lady’s Hospice has two centres, one in Harold’s Cross and one in Blackrock, but we work in the community as well. We provide specialist care for people with a wide range of needs from rehabilitation to end of life care.
